Vas County “El Camino”

Have you heard of Vas County’s “El Camino” in Hungary?

Vas County, and within it the Kemeneshát and Kemenesalja regions, not only abound in natural, historical, and cultural attractions, but also offer excellent opportunities if you are looking for spiritual rejuvenation.

“A healthy body, a healthy mind”

As the Latin saying goes, which we often hear nowadays. People who want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life long to return to nature, to recharge their batteries with its beneficial energy and then throw themselves back into the grind of gray weekdays. However, this wisdom is constantly misquoted. It actually goes like this:

“Let us pray for a healthy soul in a healthy body!”

Because where the soul deteriorates, it first affects the body, then the family, and then the larger community. Only after the soul is healthy can jogging, cycling, and everything else that serves to keep the body healthy for as long as possible come into play.

El Camino

The world-famous “El Camino” serves this purpose specifically. People traveling on it not only journey through physical space, marveling at the beauty of the countryside, but also undertake an inner journey at the same time. During this journey, they can sort out their affairs, free themselves from perceived or real problems that weigh them down, recognize the small joys of everyday life, and rediscover their inner values and those of others. But such a journey can take weeks or even months on the El Camino. However, if you only have a few days to devote to a complete mindfulness retreat, Sitke and its surroundings are an excellent choice.

Mária Út

The Mária Út trail between Sárvár and Celldömölk can be divided into sections of a few kilometers, all of which run through natural, rural surroundings. Hiking trips can be interrupted at will at the fairly densely located spas, where “pilgrims” can refresh themselves. It is particularly good news that the spas of Sárvár, Mesteri, and Celldömölk each have different beneficial effects, so that not only the soul but also the body can be completely refreshed. The “El Camino of Vas” is unique in other ways as well. In addition to religious sites such as the Church of the Assumption, home to the miraculous weeping image of the Virgin Mary in Celldömölk, it also touches on other spiritual locations. Among these are places that were marked by the locals, who were well acquainted with the beneficial forces of nature, and which were then held in high esteem in later ages. Some of these date back to the age of the Egyptian pyramids. Of course, most of these are now shrouded in legend, but walking along the “El Camino of Vas” and stopping beside and above them, we can immerse ourselves in these legends, shut out the outside world, and engage in self-examination. In this endless tranquility, many have found their true selves, some through religion, some through their belief in ancient energies, and others through esotericism.

The 5-6 kilometer easy walks on Mária Út have their charm in every season, but in autumn, walking through nature in its thousand colors, yet heralding the passing of the season, and perhaps combined with a forest bath, one is overcome by strange yet pleasant feelings. The sunbeams filtering through the morning mist make Mária Road truly spectacular at this time of year.
