What does “eco” accommodation mean to you?
A few years ago, the so-called eco or eco/green accommodation started to become more and more fashionable in the Sárvár area. Although it is of course good for guests to have some sort of a handle, if it is really important to choose “eco” accommodation, we recommend that you take the trouble to find out more about the guesthouses, apartment houses and accommodation available. What is considered “eco” by individual guests depends not only on the green operational criteria adopted by the operators of the apartments and hotels, but also on what is accepted as “eco” by the guests, by YOU, in their own value judgement.
What matters is what you, our dear future guests, consider to be “eco” accommodation, apartments, guest houses, hotels.
The guesthouses of Colonia Natura Apartment Park were probably among the first near Sárvár 15 years ago, founded with the aim of achieving a minimum environmental footprint. Of course, the legal framework at the time placed strong limits on this. But, to show you what our ultimate goal is, what we work for every day to create your comfort, your unique relaxation and your timeless holidays… well, this is what we are going to give you an insight into in this blog post.
In addition to:
we get a significant part of our energy from solar panels,
we collect our waste selectively,
we have our own composting facility,
we capture rainwater,
we maintain natural bee pastures,
we continuously afforest the area and minimise the amount of unvegetated surface (more here),
and offer the possibility to use environmentally friendly means of transport for optional activities,
we have taken a much broader approach to the “eco” commitment of our guesthouses.
In the construction of the apartment buildings, we have tried to use building materials left over from other construction sites, demolished or discarded (more on this) and to source them from as close to the site as possible. In this way, we have both reduced CO2 emissions from transport and, in the construction of our new guesthouses, we have used materials that have already been manufactured or used in the past to create truly unique yet environmentally friendly accommodation.
Our apartments are therefore not only close to nature, but also nature-friendly and natural.
One day it will be worth calculating how much extra CO2 emissions we have saved our environment in 15 years, because the materials we have used have not had to be remanufactured, and because we have saved wood from destruction, giving dozens of trees the chance to live longer and to sequester more CO2 with their foliage, and instead give us refreshing oxygen.
We have also helped to keep the environment clean by transporting a lot of roadside and forest debris to our apartment park, which we then carefully sorted and recovered many valuable building materials.
But that’s how we got the 6-7 m long and 20-30 cm wide planking of a crumbling wooden barn from the Guard National Park, as well as the 30 cm diameter slab structure of a demolished civilian house in nearby Sárvár.
Since Sárvár is bordered by volcanic terrain, these stones were also used by wealthier villagers in the countryside. Just such a 100-year-old barn building was demolished in the neighbouring village of Mesteri, whose stones were also rescued, although the building debris, together with the numerous special stone slabs sometimes measuring one metre by one metre, also ended up with us, so now we can essentially quarry the worked stones of the former building again.
And we’re mining it relentlessly, as we have another new one for you. We’re in the process of building our future little “wellness island”. The aim is still to remain authentic and “eco”, so the “salvaged” used barrel sauna and the walkway of the hot tub are made of these century old stones.
We’re taking things slowly, but we’re not aiming for perfection here either, but for naturalness and a style that matches the antique feel of our apartment buildings. Not to mention the fact that next to the “wellness island” lies our unique in-house arena, the “Gladiatorium“, the only one of its kind in the country, with a 100 sqm sand arena, which brings to life four types of gladiators.
