Visit Hungary’s Youngest Volcano Near Sárvár!
The Western Transdanubia region is rich in natural wonders, including volcanic witness hills. The Balaton Uplands and the picturesque vineyard-covered slopes of the Keszthely Basin — such as Badacsony, Csobánc, Hegyestű, and Szent György Hill—are popular destinations for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
However, if you venture away from Lake Balaton toward the northern parts of Western Transdanubia, you’ll find the uniquely shaped Somló Hill just a half-hour’s drive from our distinctive guesthouses. Renowned for its exceptional wines and panoramic views, Somló Hill invites you for a delightful hike among its well-trodden vineyards. Along the way, you’ll surely find a cellar where you can sample the local specialty, Somlói Juhfark. At the summit, the beautifully restored castle of Vak Bottyán, a famous Kuruc general, offers a fascinating historical backdrop.
From here, you can easily reach Ság Hill , located near our nature-inspired apartments in Sárvár, either by car or on foot. Its twin truncated cones rise alongside the smaller Kis-Somlyó, often called Somló’s little sibling. These volcanic hills interrupt the gentle landscapes of Western Transdanubia’s wandering region, defined by the duality of Kemeneshát and Kemenesalja.
To the northwest of Kis-Somlyó’s charming basalt cone and pristine tuff ring, between Miske and Sitke, lies a perfectly circular ring-shaped ridge. While the water that once filled its basin was drained decades ago, its formation mirrors the famous circular volcanic lakes near Rome. Another highlight is Herczeg Hill, located near Sitke, where our uniquely styled guesthouses evoke the timeless tranquility of antiquity. From these accommodations, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the fruit orchards, vineyards, and small press houses dotting the hillside.
These hills, mounds, and tuff rings all belong to the same volcanic family in Western Transdanubia. Among them, Herczeg Hill and Ság Hill stand out, not only as the northernmost members but also for their unique location at the westernmost edge of this volcanic lineage. They mark the natural boundary of the wandering region that blends the Kemeneshát hills and Kemenesalja plains.
It’s no coincidence that Sárvár and its surroundings are rich in thermal and medicinal waters. Close to our apartments, you’ll find four distinct thermal and medicinal spas, perfect for rejuvenating tired muscles after a hike and recharging for your next adventure—or simply unwinding before returning to daily life. This abundance of waters owes much to the region’s geologically recent volcanic activity. At just 5 million years old, Ság Hill is Hungary’s youngest volcano. At its base, you can relax in the Volcano Spa and Adventure Bath or the Mesteri Thermal Spa, while admiring the wonderful view of the mountain.
