3-in-1 volcano: A unique attraction near Sárvár

The nearest volcanic witness hill to Sárvár is an ideal hiking destination. The Ság Hill, rising 279 meters above the Marcal River basin, holds many surprises for visitors. This area, part of the national park, is not home to one but three volcanoes.

From our countryside guesthouses near Sárvár, the hill can be reached comfortably on foot or by bicycle. Descending into the crater, you can explore the following volcanic formations.

Whether arriving via Mesteri Thermal or the Kemenes Volcano Park, the topmost layers of the hill tell of a quieter era when a lava lake filled the area surrounded by the tuff ring of Ság Hill. As you descend into the crater, you can observe traces of a Hawaiian-style volcano, with continuous lava curtains shaping the land along a northwest-southeast axis. At the very bottom of the crater, you can witness the birth of one of the region’s most defining attractions. Five million years ago, massive explosions, akin to those of Stromboli, rocked this land dotted with saltwater lakes, remnants of the Pannon Sea, leading to the creation of Ság Hill’s magical world.

Within the triangle formed by Sárvár, Celldömölk, and Borgáta, many volcanic mounds emerged. Today, only seven smaller or larger hills remain, among them the largest tuff ring known today as Herczeg Hill or Hercseg Hill. Its view dominates the panorama from the terraces of our apartments.
